Developmental assessment

Discuss the term holistic.

The term holistic can be defined as the medical approach that is taken for an individual taking into account the behavioral, cognitive, physical, social and emotional development of that person. This report is based on a thirty-five years old female who started feeling nausea after consuming fried chicken from a restaurant, but she could not vomit. She was born in Nigeria and belongs to the race of African American origin. By profession, the patient was a medication technician. Her past medical history states that she experiences frequent and severe diarrhea, dizziness and loss of appetite. The patient informed that before the health visit she consummated "Pepto-Bismol" to get over her pain. To the contrary, she sees any improvement in her health condition (Albertson et al., 2015).

According to the present case study, the patient is at the age of thirty-five and thus she can be considered as an adult. Her past medical history reveals that she does not remember much about her childhood medical complications. But presently she is feeling nausea but cannot vomit. Except during her pregnancy she has never been to the hospital and never underwent any operation. The facts show that she has always been freed of major disease such as cardiac, respiratory or any other organ problem.  Moreover, her medical history reveals that she has no problems in the hematological aspects such as lymph node swelling, bleeding, and exposures to any radiations or toxic substances. She had a regular habit of exercise three days in a week for about thirty minutes everyday.  Her menstrual cycle duration is also normal (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2014).

Taking into consideration of the patient’s cognitive development, she feels that she is fit, and her health status is better than before. According to few types of research individuals engaged in physical activities experiences less declination in terms of cognitive development. She aims to improve in her exercise habits, and she would continue to eat healthily. According to Colarusso & Nemiroff (2013), a study about early adulthood is a time of “relativistic thinking” where an individual become aware of her complexities in the future. Depending on the two types of intelligence observed in human beings i.e. fluid and crystallized form, the patient has been discovered to develop a crystallized form of intelligence in her with time. With time she has realized that she is safe in accordance to family violence. Her personal habits of eating healthy food and non-consumption of alcohol, smoke, and other drugs reflect her awareness of her health and shows her steady cognitive and constructive development (Christ, 2015).

The patient is at the early adulthood age of development. In this particular age, the women have only forty percent chances of getting pregnant. This age is important in terms of nursing care since a lot of physical changes occur in women of this age due to menopause. Healthy screening such as mammograms can reduce the chances of major complications. According to Deutsch (2013), Optimism is a mental attitude that influences the physical and mental health. It is an attribute of an individual that help to cope up with social and also the working environment.

Sociocultural assessment

With reference to the context the patient lives along with her husband, two children, and her mother. According to her, she is a good woman and she shares a very healthy and strong relationship with her family, friends, co-workers and classmates. She also has developed a friendly and healthy relationship with her neighbors. Her habits involved spending in reading alone for about two to three hours every day after each of her family members go to bed for sleep. She feels stressed at her workplace thus gives herself relaxation by watching movies. As stated by the patient she and her family enjoys their meal at the same table (Fenwick & English, 2015).

Moreover, she loves to socialize with her neighbors and therefore she is also involved in community services. The patients turn on is neatness. Thus, she resides in a neat and peaceful zone, and she states that her working place is also very neat and clean. The patient also practices healthy habits such as using seat belts during driving, healthy food habit and exercising every three days a week. As stated by Greene (2014), nursing care at the mid-adulthood is vital in order to help one to focus more on work and family. Relating to this case nursing practice is necessary to help the patient reduce her work-life stress through either medication or therapy (Jung, 2014).

One of the literature reviews states that the employed women and complete housewives can be compared based on the features of their daily activities and the effects of these activities on their psychological well-being. As stated by the role of a working environment mediates the impact of the employment position on a married woman’s psychological welfare (Jung, 2014).

According to Korsoff et al. (2015), aging does not lead to the spiritual development of human beings rather cultural and aging concepts alter the thinking in every human in such a way that brings give rise to the awareness of the need for spiritual development and stimulates the interest in a person to pass through a spiritual journey. According to the context, the patient is a Christian, who belongs to the African American race of Nigeria. One study reveals the fact that generally, it is an observation made by elders or adults that they start enjoying their freedom in order to elevate their spiritual reflections.  On considering the case study, the patient used to utilize her freedom everyday by reading books when all the members of the family used to sleep. By getting engrossed in reading she used to get enlightened with knowledge and also she probably could develop a spiritual connection with herself (Robinson et al., 2013).

Moreover, serving others is considered to be a good deed according to every religion. In this context, the patient has been noted to involve herself in the community work which is a mode of serving others. As discussed by Fenwick & English (2015), in adulthood the concern shifts from oneself to others in the family and relatives. Her actions such as doing her professional work and also doing her household work are a means of serving her family.  As discussed by Staude (2014), nursing care in terms of spiritual development is important since in certain, complications diseased leads to physical uneasiness the patients get distressed by spiritual anxiety and recurrent alteration of behavior are seen. At this point nursing care becomes important. According to one study, the expression of patient’s spiritual requirements was recorded as hopelessness, use of spiritual practices, etc. In order to address patients in the hospital, it is, therefore, important to grow a trust, sympathy and provide them with an environment where they would feel safe. Thus it is important for a nurse to know all the medical and family history of the patient to provide proper care (Schober et al. 2012).

Spiritual assessment

As per the history of the patient there exists no neurological or psychological problem in the patient such as numbness, memory loss, nervousness, mood swing, depression or hallucination. Moreover, the patient is quite satisfied with her life and relationships. This involves her family life, employment, social, financial and also sexual life. Moreover, the patient feels safe and in terms of her husband, neighbors and work place. According to her statements which state about her nursing school, work place and family she seems to be happy and satisfied. She also achieves satisfaction from her reading and singing practices (Tiggemann & McCourt, 2013).

She was also confident of her present health status and aims to lead a healthy life in her future. Certain psychological transitions occur after thirty years in the adulthood. According to Fenwick & English (2015),  individuals feel the need to give oneself the time to realize her needs. In this context as well the patient used to give time to herself by reading books at night after others used to sleep. The only concerned was that she used to remain stressed in her working place due to the burden of the work (Winichagoon, 2013).

As stated by Tiggemann & McCourt (2013), the psychosocial support includes the culturally responsive stipulation of psychological, spiritual and social care. The psychological nursing care is important since it has a huge impact on the “quality of human life” which encompasses a wide spectrum of issues such as the physical, cognitive, social, spiritual and emotional role, especially in patients. As discussed by Christ (2015), one of the cornerstones of psychological health is the mental well-being of an individual. Few models of the positive functioning have constructed several key aspects which include self-initiation, hope, purpose of living and environment.

Conclusion:

Holistic is a medical approach that is taken for an individual taking into account the behavioral, cognitive, physical, social and emotional development of that person. This case study is based on a thirty-five years old female who started feeling nausea after consuming fried chicken from a restaurant, but she could not vomit. She was born in Nigeria and belongs to the race of African American origin. Her past medical history reveals that except during her pregnancy she has never been to the hospital and never underwent any operation. The facts show that she has always been freed of major disease such as cardiac, respiratory or any other organ problem. Her medical and family history reveals that her stress in the work place might be due to her high blood pressure which might be passed onto her from her mother. The patient does not have many physical and mental complications since she leads a very healthy life and also socializes to get satisfaction. She has developed normally in terms of physical, mental, psychological and spiritual aspects. In order to address patients in the hospital, it is, therefore, important to grow a trust, sympathy and provide them with an environment where they would feel safe. Therefore, it is important for a nurse to know all the medical and family history of the patient to provide proper care .Thus it can be concluded that if her nausea is kept under strict diagnosed and kept under consideration by nursing interventions her holistic development can be improved and her health can also be maintained.
