The following course learning outcomes are assessed by completing this assessment:
- A3. Apply business information software for data visualization and analysis purposes;
- S2. Review a range of information system applications;
- S3. Interpret and construct representations of business data flow and processes;
- K2. State the uses of emerging technologies within key industry contexts; and
- K6. Explain the concepts of software development within key industries.
The first step to creating your video and report is to explore both the technology and the industry, to understand the potential impacts.
Write a short description of the technology and the industry (150-300 words each), and add both to your ePortfolio page. You may use any relevant sources, including websites, blogs, tweets, journal articles and textbooks. Ensure you reference any sources appropriately.
For your topic, list at least three ways the technology may change or disrupt the industry. Include this list on your ePortfolio page.
If you are having trouble, remember that this is a creative task – it’s ok for your ideas to be 10 or 30 years in the future. The more you can come up with at this stage the better, even if you think your ideas are completely implausible.
Some hints:
- Consider the impact of the technology on the people in the industry; will it make their lives easier or harder?
- Can you draw parallels to other industries where your technology may have had impact?
- Are there other technologies you’re aware of that might, together with your chosen technology, have a stronger combined impact?
- Creative thinking requires a dedicated block of time and the freedom to play around with ideas. Don’t leave it to the last minute!
Once you have brainstormed a number of impacts, choose one to focus on for the next two assignment parts. Review the rest of this assignment specification before choosing.
Choose one technology impact from the previous exercise, and identify at least four factors or constraints that make this impact possible, or which might prevent it occurring.
Frame these within Lawrence Lessig’s regulations – Market, Law, Architecture (Physical/Natural) and Norm(Social/Ethical). Include them in your ePortfolio page.
At least one of the factors or constraints should be ethical in nature.
You may choose to identify one factor or constraint for each of Lessig’s categories, or have multiple in one category. For example, it is ok to have three Market constraints and one Norm constraint.
Identify one process within your industry or field that would change as a result of your chosen impact.
Some hints to identify processes:
- Consider processes in acquisition, manufacture, supply, support, staffing, and communication
- Write a brief use case – like a case study but focussing on interactions and processes
- Try searching! For example, “business processes in ticket sales” (but use your chosen business). Don’t just copy an existing diagram though.
Identify specific components of this process that would change due to your technological idea. Describe how these components would be affected by the change (200-300 words). It should be clear which events, tasks, decision points, actors, and outcomes are affected, and in which ways. This may include components being removed, replaced, augmented or added.
Include justification for why these components are affected by your specific technology.
Internet of Thing (IoT) is one of the most disruptive technologies that is revolutionising the homes, industries and other crucial bodies (Lee & Lee, 2015). It develops a virtual network with the organisation or home which is connected with all the technological equipment and also enables sharing of information among them. The discussed method enables automation and real-time monitoring of health and operation of the equipment and processes (Chiang & Zhang, 2016). It has proved to be beneficial for different industries and one of the mega industries in today’s world is fast food industry. KFC, Domino and other similar food giants are leading the path for them. Fast food industry has gained the popularity because of the instant services along with the deliciousness of their food. The discussed industry uses multiple equipment from different operations which includes kitchen apparatus, customer management tools, logistics tools and several others. Additionally, IoT together with cloud services will offer great benefit for the logistics, supply chain and other migratory operations of the industry (Thirumalai & Kar, 2017). Hence, it would be smart to automate those processes and tools to save time, resources and effort made by the work force while enhancing the service and product quality. So, the potential impact of IoT in Fast Food industry is a topic of discussion and it has been pursued by the author.

The potential impacts of the IoT in the Fast Food industry has been listed as follows:
- Fast food industry has a large delivery chain and connecting the employees and others within a network is a smart idea as it will enable to monitor the progress and send directions and notification will on move. It will also enable automated delivery by automating the vehicle.
- Along with the Kitchen apparatus such as oven, heater and others, the fast food industry are also using disruptive technology to enhance its processes. The use of VR (Virtual Reality) by KFC for training its cooks is one similar example (Taylor, 2017). Integrating the VR through IoT with other kitchen apparatus will enable them to monitor and stay notified about other activities that are going on within the kitchen while learning a new recipe.
- IoT will also enable the fast food industry to automate the food development process after receiving the order from the user. It will save time and effort by the human resources and the quality of the food will also be high.
Lawrence Lessig’s Regulation has been adopted to discuss the regulations and ethics of IoT on Fast Food industry.

- Better service and fast will develop a goodwill for the firm and in the process attract a broader consumer base providing it competitive advantage in market.
- Using automated driving vehicle or recording the real-time data of the delivery boys will need the industry to expand their network architecture from local network to the internet and expose them to internet security and privacy risk.
- It will save organisational resource, effort and time which in the process will save the financial capital of the firm and support the economy.
- It will expose the firm to privacy and security threat due to internet associated attack and is an ethical violation in context with organisational employee and customers.
The automation of delivery system has been considered as the discussion process for the deemed section
- Events: Search the available delivery boy, selection of delivery boy who is available, delivery boy receives call for delivery, delivery boys receive the parcel, route selection, travels, delivers the parcel, customer signs digital invoice, return and report.
- Activities or Tasks: Check record for availability of delivery boy, Selection of delivery boy, Delivery notification, Parcel pick up, travelling, delivery of parcel, invoice signing by customer, Reporting
- Decision points: Delivery boy available or not, picking up of parcel, selection of route, customer availability, reporting.
- Actors (people and/or objects): Store manager, Delivery boy, Database, customer
- Outcomes: Delivery of food parcel.
The first step after producing the food requested by the customer is to check the database about the availability of the delivery boy. The store manager then selects the delivery boy based on their availability, then they are assigned with the delivery process. The delivery boy will they get on the road and will decide on the road which needs to be taken so that he will face less traffic and meet the delivery time. After reaching the destination the availability of the customer needs to be ensured which on confirmation delivery will be delivered and the customer will sigh the digital invoice on delivery boys mobile or tablet. After the delivery is complete the delivery boy will return and update the report or may not update which will leave a gap in the information.
Part one – Research

- Events: Selection of delivery boy and notify who is available, delivery boys receive the parcel, best route recommendation, travelling, delivery of the parcel, customers sign, automated reporting.
- Activities or Tasks: Selection of delivery boy, Delivery notification, Parcel pick up, best route recommendation, travelling, delivery of parcel, invoice signing by customer, automated reporting
- Decision points: Picking up of parcel, customer availability.
- Actors (people and/or objects): System, Delivery boy, Customer
- Outcomes: Delivery of food parcel.
After introduction of IoT the processes will get automated. The system will automatically check the availability of the delivery boy and will notify. The delivery boy will pick up the parcel and connect to the system which will then guide the travel driver with best route. After the destination is reached the parcel will be delivered and on signing of the customer over the digital invoice the progress will be automatically updated in the database of the firm. The process such as selection of the delivery boy based on their availability will be resolved along with selection point for the best route. The manual reporting of the delivery will also be abolished because on the digital signing the system will automatically receive the update and store it. So, the effort invested by store manager and the delivery boy will be mitigated. Additionally, the records will also be maintained appropriately which earlier depended upon the delivery boys reporting.

Conclusion
The discussions above could be emphasised to state that IoT can bring in major changes in the fast food industry on adoption. The processes of the discussed industry will get a quality and resource utilisation buff. Furthermore, the efforts invested by the organisational stakeholders will also get mitigated. The information management of the industry will also be improved. Similarly, multiple processes of the industry will receive an amplification in their processes and delivery which is desirable. Hence, in conclusion it would be justified to state that IoT, if adopted as part of the fast food industry can offer prominent advantages that will offer competitive advantage to the firm.
I was always keen on gaining an insight into disruptive technologies and pursuing this assignment has enabled me to learn a lot about the IoT. Additionally, brainstorming about the potential impact of the technology on the fast food industry has changed my perception about thinking about a topic. Now, I will change the perception towards looking at things. I will research on the subject and brainstorm as well to gain a better understanding about the subject and how can I utilise the subject to assist my career and daily life. Furthermore, the assignment has also offered an insight into the IoT and I will attempt to develop a strategy to adopt it as part of my life so that I too can leverage the technology. So, finally I would like to reflect that undertaking the discussed task have changed my perception towards looking at things and I am looking forward to leverage the newly developed school.
Part two – Brainstorming
Hello, everyone
This is [name of the student] and I am a student of [name of the university]
Recently, my university assigned me an assignment that was aimed at identifying the potential impact of [technology] on [industry].
I was assigned with IoT in Fast Food Industry.
At first I was terrorised of what I need to do but as I pursued with the task, my perception changed.
The reason was IoT
IoT abbreviation for Internet of Things is a revolutionary technology.
It automates the tools that are under an IoT network and it is attained by enabling sharing of information among the tools and with the users.
As part of the assignment I brainstormed to deduce the potential impact that it will have on the industry and the findings were quite relevant.
However, I think we should discuss in general and it would be adequate to state that you and I, all of us will surely love if, we will receive the food in comparatively short time than expected.
Tracking the route or recommending route to make it simple for the delivery boy can also be perk.
Moreover, sometimes the call executives miss to write down your need for extra cheese on the pizza spoiling your mood.
All this process can be mitigated, if IoT is part of the fast food industry. Your requirements will be recorded by the system leaving little room for error. Furthermore, you will be able to track the movement of the pizza and manufacturing of your pizza which is desirable.
I think all of us will love it.
I have already forgotten about other uses of IoT and pizza is on my mind.
Domino’s please use IoT.
Thanks everyone for watching.
Please comment apart from pizza what else do you expect IoT.
