Effectively washing hands is a most important consideration for those working in a healthcare and community services workplaces, it is also relevant information for the general public in maintaining good health. For this task you are required to produce a guide, brochure or poster that relates to how to effectively wash hands. Your document needs to be designed to:

  • Be useful to healthcare and community services staff and also the general public
  • Be written in simple English so that it can be easily read and understood
  • Be supported by images and/or links to videos that demonstrate effective hand washing.

Task 1.1 - Review of Healthcare Policies and Procedures

Personal information and privacy: Every health care center and hospitals in Australia have been fund to maintain the confidentiality regarding the personal information and privacy of the patient. Infection control and personal protective equipment: It has been found that in order to control the spread of infection or pathogenic substance the hospital staffs use personal protective equipment such as hand sanitizer, gloves, masks and others. Such personal protective equipment are maintained for individual patient in the hospital settings.

Emergency procedure: Disaster is unpredictable and it could occur in any place, thus it is important to maintain proper disaster management tools in the hospital settings. In this regards proper fire management tools such as fire alarm, fire extinguisher and others disaster management tools need to maintain by the hospital authority in order to provide adequate support in case of emergency.

Child protection care: It is important to prepare child protection plan in the health care setting. The hospital authority should refer a child suffering from severe injury or health issue to the emergency medical team for adequate treatment and it is important to monitor the child 24*7 in order to ensure patient safety.

It is important to follow the all the four plan mentioned above for a manager of health care. However, the child care plan is the most important among them. It is the responsibility of the health care manager to take adequate steps in order to ensure patient safety especially for the children. He or she could arrange meeting or conference regarding child protection plan and procedure in the hospital and deal with the issues in the implementation of the plan (aihw.gov.au 2018).

In case of failure to fulfil the responsibility of a manager, he or she should amend it as soon as possible. If a manager fails to perform the above mentioned responsibility he or she would be penalized according to the penalty imposed by the Work Health and Safety Act, 2011 (worksafe.qld.gov.au 2018). So far there are few incidents regarding the breaching of legislation have been reported in Australia.

  • The World Health Organization has provided five moments of hygiene and the Australian Government has implemented effective hand washing program according to the five moments.
  • According to the rule of washing hand there are five task during which health professionals and other staffs should maintain hand hygiene, for example-
    • Before touching a patient.
    • Before aseptic procedure.
    • After touching the patient.
    • After exposure to pathogenic substance or body fluid.
    • After exposure or touching the surroundings of the patient.
  • Maintaining such steps is considered as the practice compliance with the mandate Clean Care is Safer Care (int 2018).

The communication material need to be simple so that individual from diverse background could understand the content. It is important to publish the communication material in the websites and social media to make it accessible to wide range of people. In addition the safety of the health workforce is also important to manage by the manager (Pegram et al. 2014).

The cooperation of other health care staffs is most important in order to fulfil the job responsibility of a health care manager. In this regards effective communication with the multidisciplinary team is most important. Both the verbal and non-verbal communication play a vital role, Verbal communication includes face to face communication and non-verbal includes body posture during conversation and greetings. The manager should allow the other staffs to show their views and perceptions and communicate with the manager without hesitation (Gittell, Godfrey and Thistlethwaite 2013). Such process would help a manager to perform his or her duty effectively.

On the other hand the manager need to deal and communicate with the other departments and sectors in the hospital, as it is important to create link between the different sectors of hospital in order to promote cooperation and run the health service in an effective manner (Gittell, Godfrey and Thistlethwaite 2013).

The different issues include-

  • Ethical issue- It could occur due to the violation of rules and regulation by the staffs (Schwartz et al. 2013).
  • Training regarding issue- Such issues are associated with professional skills related to training, lack of assessment and improvement in the training as well (Schwartz et al. 2013).
  • Regulatory issue- It is mainly associated with the cost and expenditure of the health care organization and also due to continuous changes in the rules and regulation, insurance and other costly services (Schwartz et al. 2013).

As a manager it is important to investigate the actors contributing to the development of such issues and introduce effective strategies to mitigate the issues in an effective manner. In addition, the manager should introduce holistic approaches and introduce training and policies for the staffs to understand the ethical responsibilities of a health professional (Kongstvedt 2012).

In order to perform the job role in an effective manner the manager should pose the adequate leadership skill, management skill, communication skill and skill to take proper decision (George et al. 2014).
