History of Artworks of David Hockney

The information system has been helpful for developing technology and devices for the improvement of operations and functions that are used at various sectors. The arts have been another major field that has seen huge development with the advent of technologies (Jackson 2015). The use of technological tools and devices had helped the artists for creating more suitable art and modifying them. The technology had helped in formation of software likes Photoshop, Picasa, Sketch Book, etc. for making the art works more attractive and pleasant.

The following report had been made on the analysis of the impact of technology on the art work. The analysis of the art works of David Hockney had been selected for analyzing the impact of technology on the art works. The following assignment would provide an insight on the role played by the technological iPad and iPhone for improving the quality of the art works of David Hockney.

David Hockney started painting at Royal College of Art and he fought for graduation in 1962 with his painting The Diploma (Digital meets Culture, 2017). He made a series of paintings that comprises of expressionist elements and highly vibrant colors. He had made prints, portraits, and stage designs for La Scala, Glyndebourne, Royal Court Theatre, and Metropolitan Opera in New York City. David Hockney had the Synaesthesia because of which he was able to see various synesthetic colors with response to music stimuli. This ability was seen when he was designing stage sets for opera and ballet as he used some very imagistic colors for the sets. His portraits would mostly comprise of his friends and family members.

Later on David Hockney moved to formation of photo collage for which he coined the term joiners. He used Polaroid for forming snaps of the single subjects. Photolab prints were made and the patchwork was arranged for making a composite image (Hockneypictures.com 2017). The photographs were taken from various perspectives and different timings so that David Hockney was able to deploy Cubism. Later on his paintings shifted to drawings with the help of brushes app of iPhone and iPad, stylus, digital inkjet printer for making large paintings in less than 20 minutes of time.

The paintings of David Hockney had undergone the touch of technology with the inclusion of various tools and technological devices for easing the painting processes (Digital meets Culture, 2017). The use of digital painting equipments was helpful for providing more effective touch of colors and textures.

Development seen in the David Hockney’s Artworks

Before using iPad or iPhone: David Hockney had used Adobe Photoshop, stylus and touch sensitive pads before for making his paintings. The Matelot Kevin Druez 2 was created and printed on the paper with the aid of inkjet printers and Adobe Photoshop. It was one of the most detailed digital works of David Hockney before he opted for using iPad devices.

After using iPad or iPhone: The use of iPad had been well endowed by David Hockney for making more realistic paintings and portraits (Miller 2014). The brushes were replaced by the stylus, colors were replaced by brush application and the paper was replaced by the screen of iPad (or iPhone). The Yosemite I was one of the most famous paintings of David Hockney that was created by using the smart technology of Apple’s iPad. The brightly colored aesthetic designs of the painting allow David Hockney for matching tones and colors faster than before. The Yosemite II was another major painting of David Hockney with the help of Apple’s iPad and he has captured the entire scenario in landscape format as one sitting.

David Hockney realized the benefits of new media for forming development in the methods of creating better paintings and portraits (Nysjö et al. 2016). Some initial foundation and use of technology by David Hockney are,

Use of camera lucida: David Hockney had first noticed the use of technical tools in paintings of Andy Warhol’s slide projected photographs (Perkins 2017). He realized the use of a small prism mounted (camera lucida) that is helpful for enabling the artist to refract the image in paper.

Use of Video Camera: David Hockney kept of experimenting with technologies for forming better ways for innovative paintings. He was inspired from the use of convex mirrors by Jan van Eyck and implemented video camera for forming larger filed views on his canvas (Yang et al. 2013). He had used four sets of nine LED screens to roll footage in one of 4 seasons.

Use of iPad or iPhone: The technology had been largely exploited by David Hockney for creating his paintings and drawings (Toda, Salazar and Saito 2013). His painting on iPad and his iPhone has being regarded as one of the best use of technology for the art industries. The work has been regarded same as what the medieval artists used to do with colors and paintings. The deployment of the technical innovation has resulted in forming the best and the most suitable formation of the paintings in term of digital media paintings.

Use of Technology in David Hockney’s Paintings

The impact of technology has been seen on the paintings of David Hockney. The history section of development of the paintings of David Hockney has pointed out that the methods of paintings changes from paint brushes to computer devices to Apple’s iPad (Ma, Wang and Sun 2014). The use of stylus, brush applications, and iPad had helped in easing the paintings creation by David Hockney. The impacts of technology on the process of paintings by David Hockney can be explained by analyzing it on the basis of two characteristics,

The implementation of the technological development had been helpful for modifying the conceptual modification of David Hockney (Sekar 2014). The implementation of iPad for the creation of paintings and portraits had resulted in forming suitable and faster accessible processes of modification. The use of digital media painting methods had been helpful for the providing scope for more clear ideas and subjects of paintings. The impacts of the digital paintings from the conceptual point of views are eliminating the chances of decay of art made, unlimited possibilities of creative ideas, various creative tools, and easy clean.

Longevity of art: The digitally created paintings have no fear of being decayed or decomposed with passage of time (Hennig 2016). The traditional paintings that are drawn on papers may fade or the spark may die with some passage of time. However, the digitally created paintings have longer duration of time for stability. The artist having the idea that his/her art could be stored permanently without decomposition of the colors (fade away with time) can use bright colors without any hesitation. The artists would have the assurance that if the painting gets destroyed or damaged, he/she can make another print out from the printer. David Hockney used the same concept for making his paintings immortal.

Unlimited ideas for paintings: The digital media uses fast processing tools and techniques. David Hockney uses iPad and his iPhone for creating painting with the help of stylus and printing device. The digital media tools provide scope for easy replacement and modification of the painting (Nysjö et al. 2016). The trial and error method could be used for checking a number of ideas for sketching the painting. The deployment of the digital media tools like Photoshop and painting applications would help in increasing the limitation of ideas for the painter. David Hockney used the same concept for increasing the validation of the various ideas and increasing his boundaries of painting ideas.

Impact of the Technology on the Concepts and Aesthetic of David Hockney

Various creative tools and easy clean: The use of digital tools has been promptly used by David Hockney because of the advent and introduction of various tools and devices for paintings. The various brushes application and sketchbook software have encouraged him to use them for painting his imagination (Chiu 2017). The brushes application has simultaneously varied effects that have been modified with time being. David Hockney has used those sketch and brush effects for making his painting more prominent, realistic, and spontaneous in natural approach.

The aesthetic or artistic nature of the painters has been largely influenced by the use of digital media tools. David Hockney had used iPad and printer devices for making his pictures more demanding and immersive (Luo, Yang and Hua 2016). He had used his iPad and iPhone devices for the creation of paintings and portraits with a more clear ideas and subjects of paintings. The use of iPad and printing devices has been largely helpful for providing him the benefit of spontaneous paintings, illustration of the thoughts, and ease of alterations.

Spontaneous painting: David Hockney has been using his iPad and iPhone for drawing along with stylus. The use of stylus has eased the modification of the subtle drawing and paintings. The device iPad and iPhone can be easily carried to any location and David Hockney can carry the device to anywhere too (Powell 2015). It would be possible to paint from any location and any place. For example, if David Hockney had gone to any place and there is a scene of sunset that is looking awesome. He would have to bring out his iPhone or iPad and paint the scenery without any problem. The requirement to bring the drawing board, colors, and brushes have all being removed and omitted (Luo, Yang and Hua 2016). The spontaneity in the making of paintings have provided an edge over the traditional paintings.

Illustration of thoughts: The use of technologically advanced devices like iPhone or iPad would help in easing the formation of illustrations of the paintings. The digital devices and tools have been largely helpful for animation and thinking beyond the box (Taylor 2016). The use of such devices would also help the artists for easing the process of penning down the thoughts and ideas. The illustrative applications are all helpful for getting a basic base line for the creation and building up of the painting and sketches. David Hockney had used the same ease of illustration for drawing many great and famous paintings in his iPad and iPhone. The basic illustration is helpful for progressing solidly on the painting completion.

Ease of alteration: The digital paintings provide the ease of faster and safer alteration for the painting errors or flaw. The traditional painting style always has the issue of keeping the base line clean and error free. Even a drop of paint would be able to destroy the taste of the complete painting. However in digital painting no such issue is faced, The painter can clear the painting from errors without the fear of painting being destroyed (Hammer 2016). David Hockney had ben benefitted by the same concept of easy alterations in his paintings made on iPad and iPhone.

Conclusion

The report had analyzed the impact of technology on the art work of David Hockney. David Hockney had made a series of paintings that comprises of expressionist elements and highly vibrant colors, prints, portraits, and stage designs along with photo collage that he termed as joiners. He used Polaroid for forming snaps of the single subjects and patchwork for making a composite image. However, his paintings shifted to drawings with the help of brushes app of iPhone and iPad, stylus, and digital inkjet printer. David Hockney had used Adobe Photoshop, stylus and touch sensitive pads before for making more realistic paintings and portraits.

The brushes were replaced by the stylus, colors were replaced by brush application and the paper was replaced by the screen of iPad (or iPhone). The report had concluded that David Hockney had been using iPad for the creation of paintings and portraits and it had been helpful for attaining longevity of art, unlimited ideas for paintings, various creative tools and easy clean, spontaneous painting, illustration of thoughts, and ease of alteration.
