Imperialism and Colonialism
Write an essay about Colonialism.
Imperialism refers to the policy that pertains to the involvement of a nation in the extension of the power of the concerned nation by acquiring foreign lands by the various processes that might include the employment of the diplomatic strategies, the force of the militia that has been serving the concerned nation and by the method of the purchase of the concerned lands (Mattingly 2013). The concept of imperialism differs from the concept of the colonialism though both the concepts are often confused to be similar to each other (Cain and Hopkins 2014). The concept of colonialism states that the policy as adopted by the concerned polity aims to deal with the ability of the concerned polity to bring about an extension or the retention of the authority of the concerned polity over the other territories and the residents of the area. The concept of colonialism generally aims to develop or exploit the residents of the colony in order to help in the development of the colonizing polity (Lehning 2013). The colonization also aims to bring about a modernization in the colony as per the definition of the term by the colonizers with a major focus on the economics of the country, the health of the residents of the country and the religion that is majorly followed within the country (Altbach 2015). The following essay deals with the various strategies adopted by the colonizers and proceeds further to discuss on the various countries that were affected by the colonizing processes. The essay continues to discuss the reasons for the colonization in the concerned countries and nears its end with a discussion on the various consequences that resulted from the colonization of the concerned countries with more stress on the economic consequences that were faced by the residents of the concerned area that was facing the colonization by the comparatively powerful polity.
The concerned political entity that is known to have been colonized a foreign land or territory needs to implement various strategies in order to complete the concerned process. The major intent of concerned colonizers in all times is the development of the colonizing polity with the help of the various trade relationships that the concerned country had established with the concerned authorities that had been functional within the colonized territory. The major strategy adopted by the colonizers might therefore refer to the proposed economic development of the colonized territory. The colonizers, however also adopted the strategies that had led to the implementations and the employment of the various ways of development of the concerned colony. The other strategies that are observed to have been put to use by the concerned colonizers are the strategies that deal with the conquering of the concerned areas of the foreign lands by the implementation of the military forces of the colonizing polity (Goddeeris 2014). This strategy has been observed to deal with the various matters that are related to the transfer of the administrative power of the concerned territory or state into the hands and control of the colonizers of the land. The colonization strategies that were followed during the modern times tended to involve the matters that pertain to the signing of the trade treatise in the initial stages. This might further continue to deal with the settlements of the concerned colonizers within the boundaries of the concerned lands. The colonizing of the various countries might initiate from the treatise of the development of the concerned country that has been colonized however, with the passage of time the colonizing entity tends to become oppressive for the native residents of the concerned countries thereby leading to the conditions that pertain to the oppression of the native people who have been residing in the concerned country prior to the arrival of the colonizers to the land. The major strategies that are implemented by the colonizers of the land are the matters that are related to the exploitation of the concerned native people of the country in order to bring about an improvement of the economic conditions of the concerned colonizing polity.
Strategies of Colonialism
The major states of the world that have been affected by the colonization of the other foreign forces in the country generally belong to the developing countries of the world. The colonization in the modern age refers to the colonization that is meted out by the various European countries to the various countries that are majorly situated within the continents of Asia, America, Africa and the areas of the Oceania. The various countries that have been facing the issues of the colonialism are the various countries that belong to the category of the developing nations of the world and might also be termed as the countries that have been grouped under the “third-world country” group. The native residents of these countries had also been compelled to face the various atrocities and oppressions that are faced by the concerned residents of the colonies (Laidlaw and Lester 2015). The European settlers have been documented to have been extremely oppressive and torturous in the treatment that they had meted out to the concerned members of the society. The treatment that were meted out to the natives of the various territories was similar or even worse than those that were extended to the dark-skinned slaves. The concerned countries that were involved within the activity included the various European nations like England, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Netherlands (Bartkowski 2013). The various officers who were appointed by the governments of the concerned countries in order to establish the better governance in the concerned areas that have been colonized by the various greater powers tended to meet out the slave like treatment to the local people mostly because of the low financial status of the concerned masses as well as the lack of the sophistication in the communication strategies and manners that are practiced within the concerned societies (Butt 2013). The oppression and the poor treatment meted out to the concerned members of the colonized societies might have led to the conditions of mutiny and revolt within the concerned countries of the world that have been colonized by the various European countries.
The colonialism of the concerned countries had an immense effect on the concerned economy of the society, the health of the residents of the country and the matters that pertain to the various religious beliefs that are followed by the concerned organization. The reasons that are cited by the concerned colonizers for the establishment of the concerned colony generally refer to the reasons that are related to the expansion of the trade within the concerned country there by leading to the overall development of both the concerned colonizer as well as the concerned colony that has been acquired by the superior power. The major factors that relate to the economic reasons behind the colonization of a particular territory of the foreign lands might stem from the fact that the concerned territory does possess the various factors that might help in the upliftment of the economy of the concerned colonizer state. The various historical documents on the European colonization state that the concerned colonizer states were known for the procurement of the various materials that were unavailable in their home country from the various colonized states wherein the concerned products were available in plenty. This helped the concerned colonizer states to increase the overall economy of the country as well as increase the amount of the exports from the concerned colonies. The native people of the colonized territories were also reported to have been paid low wages than they should have been receiving thereby leading to the conditions wherein the concerned colonizers were facing a high margin of profit on the various goods and the products that they have been exporting to the concerned colonizing European country (Islam 2013). The other major factor behind the colonization is the huge amount of cheap labor that was known to be available in the various developing and the under-developed countries of the then world. The cheap and the readily available labor in these countries made the developing and the under-developed countries of the then world a huge attraction for the colonizers who aimed to bring about an overall change in the economy of the country. The cheap labor, the ready availability of the raw materials, the abundance of the skilled labors and the low cost of the production of the various goods had led to the conditions that dealt with the all-round upliftment of the overall economy of the concerned colonizer country.
Countries Affected by Colonialism
The consequences of the colonization seemed to affect the economy of the country in a huge manner. The concerned colonizer country has been observed to put forth a huge boost in the economical as well as the overall growth of the European colonizers. However, the colonies of the concerned European country have been facing a loss in the overall economy of the country. The residents of the concerned country had not been receiving the grants from the concerned ruling body of the country. The colonization of the developing and the underdeveloped countries of the world might have led to the conditions wherein the various taxes imposed within the boundaries of the colony might have been helping in development of the colonizer country as well as help in the upliftment of the various members who have been serving the concerned colonizer in the areas wherein the concerned country might have been putting forth a colony (Weldemichael 2013). The various officers who were appointed by the governments of the concerned countries in order to establish the better governance in the concerned areas that have been colonized by the various greater powers tended to meet out the slave like treatment to the local people mostly because of the low financial status of the concerned masses as well as the lack of the sophistication in the communication strategies and manners that are practiced within the concerned societies. The oppression and the poor treatment meted out to the concerned members of the colonized societies might have led to the conditions of mutiny and revolt within the concerned countries of the world that have been colonized by the various European countries. The native residents of these countries had also been compelled to face the various atrocities and oppressions that are faced by the concerned residents of the colonies. The European settlers have been documented to have been extremely oppressive and torturous in the treatment that they had meted out to the concerned members of the society. The treatment that were meted out to the natives of the various territories was similar or even worse than those that were extended to the dark-skinned slaves. This had led to the concerned colonized country to face a huge amount of the loss in the economic factors that might have been existent within the concerned country thereby leading to the increase in the feeling of the revolt or muting against the concerned representative rulers of foreign origin.
Reasons for Colonization
Thus, from the above discussion it might be concluded that the colonization of the various developing and the underdeveloped countries of the world might impact the economy of the concerned countries. The concept of colonialism generally aims to develop or exploit the residents of the colony in order to help in the development of the colonizing polity. The colonization also aims to bring about a modernization in the colony as per the definition of the term by the colonizers with a major focus on the economics of the country, the health of the residents of the country and the religion that is majorly followed within the country.
