Analyzing Media Houses Using Media Theories
The two news items chosen for this report are television stations. The television stations are Sky News Australia and 9 News Australia stations. “6600 hospital workers off job due to covid-19” is the media event piece chosen that took place on January 12 2022. Sky News Australia started telecom its 24-hour public news administration on 19 February 1996 on Foxtel, turning into Australia's initial every minute of every day news station, worked by Australian News Channel Pty Ltd, a joint endeavor between British Sky Broadcasting (Sky Plc), Seven West Media and Nine Entertainment Co (Wolff, 2021). 9 News is the public news administration of the Nine Network in Australia. Its leader program is the drawn out 6:00 pm state release, delivered by Nine's claimed and-worked stations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin.
The media event is an issue that occurred in victoria during the covid-19 pandemic period. The event was aired on 12th of January 2022 on both the media houses. 6600 healthcare workers were unable to work anymore in victoria health facilities leading to shortage and thus a strain ((https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9HyVgbDsVM). This report is carried out to review the credibility of media sources and accuracy of information given by the sources. In this report specifically, an event about 6600 healthcare inability to continue working due to covid 19 has been used as a case study to review credibility of the information. The media sources in focus are Sky News Australia and 9 News Australia. The two media houses and reviewed and compared based on the case study event to know how accurate they are.
This section analyses the media houses based on the chosen event by using various media theories such as bias, downplay, propaganda theories. Media theories are ideas and models that can be utilized to portray media and its effect on society, culture and financial aspects. Media is any device or outlet of correspondence. Early media concentrated on the utilization of broad communications in misleading publicity and influence. Later, analysts before long focused on conducting sciences to help sort out the impact of broad communications and interchanges on society (Zollmann, 2019 p.335). Researchers have created various theories to explain the media houses effects on society. Three theories; media bias, propaganda and downplay has been used to explain the event on the two media stations in this study.
Media bias is the partiality of journalists and news reporters inside the broad communications in the choice of numerous occasions and stories that are accounted for and how they are covered (Kumar, 2021). In the news, virtual entertainment, and amusement, for example, films or TV, journalistic twist through the data these types of media decide to focus on or report. Bias prompts generalizing which can be seen on how certain things are accounted for in the news (Wolff, 2021). Looking at how the two media houses (Sky News Australia and 9 News Australia) reports the case of 6600 doctors off work in Victorian hospitals, biasness id detected.
Sky News Australia headline reads “Victoria faces healthcare worker crisis” while 9news Australia headline is “Over 6600 health staff off work in Victoria as COVID-19 death toll grows.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9HyVgbDsVM )For Sky News, the figures are reported to be 6600 workers who are not available to work while in 9 New the figures are exaggerated to over 6600 to show how serious the condition is, and this sounds against government (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBuZjVrbcCQ). Sky news sticks to 6600 workers so that it would cover up with the government that not large numbers are affected. Sky news uses a phrase “we knew this would happen after we came out of the lockdown”, this statement sounds biased to protect either the government or the hospital administrations. It doesn’t sound fair to justify an event or occurrence as a media house (using the phrase “we”), instead everything reported should be from data or information gathered.
Media Bias in Sky News Australia and 9 News Australia Reporting
Comparing the same case event reporting, Sky News reports what they have deducted from the Ministers presentation while the 9 news plays the exact ministers speech. Biasness is present in this case since; Sky limit limits what to report about the healthcare workers crisis while 9 News exposes everything as was reported by the health deputy minister. The health deputy minister answers a question by confirming that the workers unavailable are over 6600 while Sky News avoids the exact figures and reports exactly 6600 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9HyVgbDsVM).
The news, regardless of whether we like it, is biased. Some news is unfair towards republicans while other media sources are one-sided towards democrats (Broniatowski et al., 2020). It's critical to grasp this while watching or perusing the news to be media proficient. This can be precarious on the grounds that columnists might accept that their revealing is composed with "decency and equilibrium" however most times there is a hidden predisposition based around what news supplier the story is being composed for.
Media propaganda is another aspect of theory that most media houses display (Farkas and Neumayer, 2020 p. 315). The hypothesis sets that the manner by which corporate media is organized (for example through publicizing, convergence of media possession or government obtaining) makes an intrinsic irreconcilable circumstance and subsequently goes about as declaration for hostile to vote based elements (Chaudhari and Pawar, 2021). The model attempts to comprehend how the general population is controlled, and the way that the social, financial, political mentalities are designed in the personalities of individuals through declaration.
9 News in this event presentation tries to convey more messages from the government to show how the government is concerned about the covid situation and intends to recruit more workers. 9 News greatly pushes the vaccination agenda; this is to portray the governments’ concern to people’s health. 9 News has the main aim of spreading propaganda on how the government is overworking, there’s no doubt they could do this since it’s a national television. Sky News gives a short presentation about the event, since they are not interested much in promoting the governments publicity.
It is true what propaganda theory is about; a misleading theory spotlights on imbalance of riches and influence and its staggered impacts on broad communications interests and decisions (Anderson, 2021). It follows the courses by which cash and power can sift through the news fit to print, underestimate disagree, and permit the public authority and prevailing private interests to make themselves clear to general society (Dietrich and Eck2020 p.1046).
Lastly downplay theory also describe the accuracy and authenticity of the media houses and the information they give (Spinde et al., 2021). The media can either stress on what is for their opinion or downplay what is good from the oppose. The Sky news downplayed the number of health workers unavailable for Victoria health facilities (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBuZjVrbcCQ). Sky news provide less information about government efforts to solve the situation, thus tries to downplay the publicity of the government. 9 News Australia promotes the government agenda and stresses on the performance of the government. 9 News insists on vaccination for the people since this is an agenda of the government while sky news lightly talks about vaccination (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9HyVgbDsVM).
Media Propaganda in Sky News Australia and 9 News Australia Reporting
From the study, the media houses Sky News Australia and 9 News Australia portray the media theories practically. The authenticity of media and the information they feed the public is truly distorted in some way. Biasness is full in how media reports issues; reporters and news writers may be biased knowingly or unknowingly. Different media sources convey information to the public in ways that best suit them (Hassell et al., 2020).
It is also true that media houses spread propaganda that may affect the public negatively or positively (Hamborg et al., 201 p.396). The propaganda theory is a model that is currently practical as displayed in the case study above for Sky News and 9 News. The Information Given To The Public By Media Is Influenced By Classes People In Authority Wealth And Size Of The Media House Depending On The Several Factors mentioned above, media chose what information to convey to the public and how to convey it.
Depending on the information being passed to the public, the public can be deceived, manipulated, threatened or pushed into an action or a matter. The way Sky News gives detailed information on covid-19 vaccination is perceived to be for instilling fear into the public (Asano et al., p.13). The population may be misinformed on certain matters leading to them ending in wrong direction. Media bias, propaganda and downplay are currently on the rise with the several trending news.
Conclusion
In conclusion, media bias, propaganda and downplay makes an intrinsic irreconcilable circumstance and subsequently goes about as promulgation for hostile to vote based elements. The theories attempts to comprehend how the populace is controlled, and the way that the social, financial, political mentalities are designed in the personalities of individuals through promulgation. A misleading publicity model spotlights on this imbalance of riches and influence and its staggered impacts on broad communications interests and decisions. It follows the courses by which cash and power can sift through the news fit to print, underestimate disagree, and permit the public authority and prevailing private interests to make themselves clear to general society
