Importance of Self-Assessment for Leadership
In essence, the desire to lead is the first and the most prerequisite aspect for leaders. In this light, it takes a lot of hard work for one to become an effective leader. The obtained score means a lot to me given the fact that it, will guide me in future to create a vision as well as set directions for my future organization. Additionally, it gives me the ability to motivate others with an aim of delivering a particular set vision and objective.
A2. Ideally, there are certainly various leadership models or rather theories that I could use to provide a good framework for my leadership development. Nonetheless, the best leadership theory that suits me is the trait theory that defines the overall characteristics that makes up a good leader. According to trait theory of leadership, all effective leaders are bound to share a common personality or rather characteristics (Trorey & Cullingford, 2017). In essence, trait theories are important in that they help people in identifying leadership characteristics as well as traits. Some examples of useful traits that this type of theory can be identified with are the aspect of integrity, empathy, assertiveness, good decision-making skills as well as likability of a particular individual. However, none of this traits or rather characteristics guarantee a person success in leadership especially without being developed.
The selected theory will provide a good framework for my overall leadership development. One way in which this theory will develop my leadership trait is that it will inculcate the aspect of good decisions making in me. Although I sometimes make good decisions, I have often underestimated the number of challenges that I have often faced. In this light, using trait theory will enable me to sharpen my decision-making techniques and thus improving my leadership characteristics (Terrell,Terrell, Lindsey, & Lindsey, 2018). Additionally, this theory will be in a position of nurturing the aspect of integrity in me thus handling all issues in the leadership position with openness and utmost trust.
A3. Behind every successful leader, there are always some specific vibrant cultures that are often assumed to energize the employees. In most cases, this type of culture has been personified and defined by a particular leader. In this light, shaping a culture is, therefore, a formidable task since most leadership qualities are never taught in classrooms.
- There are various factors that are considered in shaping an individual’s culture as well as personality in a societal setting especially when it comes to leadership development. In essence, common beliefs systems that are considered to be established as well as shared within a particular society are a major contributing factor that shapes an individual’s personality (Tattum, D., 2017; Tattum, E., 2017). Cultures play a huge part in defining the overall personality of an individual. Despite biological and social differences making an impact on a person’s culture, an individual’s experience is also a major element in shaping the culture of people. Indian culture has in most cases dictated how personal leadership styles are formed. While I would prefer a leadership style that embraces egalitarianism in communication, my Indian culture does not favor a communication that includes a healthy discussion or rather communication among team members.
- Working in a rather diverse environment particularly in the workplaces has never been an easy thing to do especially for leaders. However, local leaders have in many cases managed to integrate the diversity that a particular workplace present while respecting their cultures (Sosik & Jung, 2018). One way in which management or rather local leaders can make the best out of a diversified workforce is by first making sure that the leaders are diverse in cultures. When a leadership comprising of diverse cultures work hard as a team, workers will be determined to go extra mile within a set group of employees. Respecting the employee’s culture is imperative. For leaders to respect workers’ culture, they should learn to listen to each other employee, show the employees that they care especially for their culture.
- A good organization is the ones that respect the cultures of its employees on a daily basis or rather a daily activity. There are various organizations that I can choose across the globe that best fits my cultural values, however, RMS is one of the Indian company that I consider to best fit my personal culture (Mendenhall et al., 2017). The main reason why this organization is the best in my perspective is due to the fact that it allows a conversational communication strategy among the leaders and employees as well as facilitating leadership development strategy through mentoring and coaching.
A4. There are various leadership qualities that I can often identify myself with especially when handling a group of people or rather my colleagues. Some elements of good leadership skills that act as a guiding pillar in my career journey are a strong communication trait, motivator, and practice some sense of delegation (Maguire & Blaylock, 2017). As a leader in most of my groups in school, I have always tried my best to succinctly explain everything to my colleagues in detail from setting goals to rather specific tasks (Little, 2017). I try my best to master all forms of communication, including a one-to-one, full-staff conversation, as well as communicating through the phone. Additionally, I often engage myself in listening to the views of my colleagues and what they communicate regarding the progress of the team in case we are working towards achieving a particular goal (Huda, Mat, Nor, & Mohd, 2018). On the other hand, I try my best to inspire my colleagues to go extra mile especially by giving them credit and recognizing their work and effort that they put. While leaders are supposed to act as an example to others, a good leader should be in a position of delegating duties to the workers or rather colleagues (Eve, 2017). In this case, I try my best to divide duties among my colleagues based on their abilities. This is important as it helps in saving time and thus achieving a certain goal in time.
Different Leadership Models and Their Applications
As a leader, it is important for one to identify the set of strengths and weaknesses he or she holds. Some of my strengths include good observational skills, good teamwork, can demonstrate my working knowledge and expertise, and ability to take risks. Some of my weakness especially working in a team or rather as a leader of a team is poor decision-making skills and poor time manager (Ballantyne & Povah, 2017). The main two areas of leadership styles and practice that I intend to improve include the need to improve on decision making and the need to develop skill particularly in conducting as well as developing research.
- One of the most valuable skills that a leader ought to have is the ability to make a rather calm, clear as well as effective decisions. In fact the aspect of decision making is a critical element in virtually every job, with the decisions made each an everyday having a direct impact on a particular organization. Additionally, improving the skill especially of developing research is important in a business setting particularly if there is a need for new ideas or rather improving on an already existing concept. By improving decision making I intend to occasionally make the right decisions and on time as well as researching on various subjects. Additionally I will be in a position to offer solutions with an aim of improving work relationships, problem solving as well as communication.
- There are various ways in which an individual can improve on decision making skills as well as develop on research in techniques. Some of the strategies I will use include getting some arts as well as culture in my life, develop a programming or rather language skills, and hand out with all kind of ages.
