The Significance of Ethics and Laws in Employee and Customer Relations
In small groups, discuss the importance of working ethically and according to the law, and also the differences between what is ethical and what is legal.
Ethics and laws are important as they influence the governing of employee relations. Both ethical and legal concerns are applied when dealing with employee hiring and firing, the treatment of management towards the employees including the payment issues and also the working environment. Additionally, ethics and laws are crucial in dealing with customer relations. This stipulates how organizations treat their customers. On the difference between what is ethical and what is legal, whereas the legal standards are based on written law, the ethical standards are based on human rights and wrongs.
Choose one model or process of professional reflection, explain why it is important and describe its benefits.
Gibbs reflective model is one of the commonly used professional models. This model helps users to learn from their experiences. It helps workers to evaluate their situations at work place hence understand what they did good and what they have to improve in future. It benefits the user to learn from his achievements and improve his weaknesses.
Outline three professional development opportunities and explain which ones you would personally benefit from the most at this stage in your career.
The three professional development opportunities include;
- Working in the education sector
- Working in the healthcare sector
- Working in the charity sector
At this stage of my career, I would prefer working in the healthcare sector as a counselor where I would help clients with a range of problems. It is in this set up that I would be able to engage my competence demonstration skills, observation skills and make a reflective analysis.
Identify three work methods/practices and explain which one would most suit your learning style.
The three work practices include;
- Reflect on own practices
- Ensure continuing self-support and supervision
- Operate within an agreed on a code of ethics and practice
The third practice of operating within an agreed code of ethics and practice would most suit my learning style. This is because it extends to incorporate all the other work practices including self-reflection, self-support, and supervision. This practice recognizes the effects of values, beliefs, and behaviour in a work environment. It also advocates for the adherence to the legal parameters relevant to the practitioner's profession. It also enables the practitioner to set realistic goals and targets for self-development.

Reflect on your professional practice and write a report
Everyone has a degree of limitation in his professional career. As a professional practitioner, I have to evaluate my weaknesses and strengths to be effective in my workplace. Since as a practitioner, I deal with different kinds of clients with a different culture, beliefs, and behaviour, I have to make sure that my values, culture, and behaviour does not conflict with those of the clients. I have to understand my weaknesses so that they do not become a limiting factor in my career development and service delivery. However, my strengths in being outspoken, outstanding, understanding should add up to the elements of my career development. As a professional practitioner, I would like to improve my negotiation and conflict resolution skills. I believe this is achievable because I am social and can be able to communicate openly with the people I support. At the beginning of my career, I had not developed the aspect of self-awareness, and thus I found my values, beliefs, and behaviour often in conflict with that of the clients. However, after developing the aspect of self-awareness, I was in a position to avoid such situation, and today, I ensure that my values, beliefs, and behaviour are in harmony with those of the organization and clients. Additionally, my current situation about values, beliefs, and behaviour is influenced by my willingness to listen to and to work closely with a cultural specialist. I would give negative feedback to who I was five years ago as I acted as a naïve practitioner with a certain ego influenced by my culture, belief, values, and behaviour. The three forms of feedback which would be insightful in my current performance include; Appreciation, coaching, and evaluation.
Exploring Gibbs Reflective Model for Professional Development
Devise a basic self-development plan for the next three months of your career.
My self- development plan runs for the next three months. In this plan, I will include the goals (what I want to achieve in the three months period). After analyzing the feedback, I identified the gaps which I need to close within the period. I need to increase my clientele, to reduce my turn around time among others. To gauge the success of my plan, I will employ the various evaluation tools to measure the attainment of my targets. I may opt to utilize the benefit of reflective diaries to measure my achievements. I will have to engage my support network which includes my supervisor and my body-mentor. To enhance my skills, I will need the support of the human resource to consider me in the various organizational training. I would also extend to seek additional support from persons outside the organization. These include but not limited to a spiritual leader, health professionals, and cultural liaison officers. I would also invite the contribution of a specialist in my practitioner's profession to enhance my skills and expertise. To mitigate stress and other negative symptoms, I would do the following; meditate, reach out, decompress, be present and tune in to my body. I would consider having a performance review on the first day of every month for the three months.
