4. In Tillie Olsen’s story titled” I stand Here Ironing” (p, 9) events can change in a historical situation but not the truth. Staged in the war years, the story the narrator does not remember the occurrences well, which means historical facts can have distortions. However, it s a fact that there was war in the 1940s because there was suffering, unpreparedness and uncertainties. The truth about its specific dates and location shows that truth cannot change. In the story, love unites the family as Susan, Emily and Ronnie look up to their mother for support in a distressing time of war. Emily shows signs of missing out on paternal love (p, 10) as she shows withdrawal signs. Maternal love from a caring mother may not always work when the mother tries helplessly to show her daughter that she is valued more than the household chores (p, 11).

Choy, Watson’s “The Jade Peony” (p, 204) explains the love that his grand mother gave to the whole family. Her illness was heartbreaking for everyone, especially when she spoke about death. The narrator describes his grand mother as a likeable personality loved in the neighborhood. Out of love, she took her grandson for shopping, made them toys and they spent time together.
