Students will be assigned one topic to be done individually (or in a pairing of two). Each student will be required to prepare an appropriate response to the topic assigned which is to be presented in two ways:

(a) An oral presentation to the class.

(b) A report to accompany your presentation is to be brought (hard copy) to class with you on the day of your presentation and is to be given to the lecturer who will read it that day and give it back to you for correction (if needed). After any corrections are completed by you, the report is then to be sent to your lecturer as an email attachment (through your UTS email account only) and it will be lodged on Online by the lecturer. This makes it available to all in the course for their use as necessary. (See Online for the individual rating sheet for the marking scale).

When attaching this file to your email, the file must be named exactly as per the following example:

[- Note - both component (a) and (b) are assessment tasks for which marks will be awarded in accordance with assessment guidelines in the course outline.]

  • In order to perform well inthis assessment task, students should demonstrate appropriate research and provide a clear informative analysis and evaluation of the topic area.
  • Presentations should make use of Powerpoint, overheads and any other instructional aids (e.g., videos) to enhance delivery.
  • Each presentation should be accompanied with a Reportrelevant to the topic. (See below for further details)
  • Excessive reliance on and READING OF PRE-PREPARED NOTES is undesirable and will result in a poor mark. The presentation MUST NOT BE JUST THE READING OUT OF THE REPORT. Marks (5/10) will be deducted for doing this. The presentation should include the main points of the report and should attempt to make the topic interesting for the students in the class by the use of interesting media etc.
  • The largest piece of paper you can hold whilst delivering your presentation is a palm card. You must not read from the monitor.
  • Have the presentation saved to a USB – there will not be enough time for each student to log into their account and retrieve files. Copy the presentation to your USB and bring that with you.
  • Students should plan their presentation in keeping with the various rating sections of the individual presentation rating sheet being used to evaluate each presentation.
  • Presentations must be made on the due date. If you are ill on the day the report and the presentation slides must still be submitted by the due dateas you have had the time to prepare it beforehand.
  • If the report and slides are not sent on or before the due date marks will be deducted automatically.
  • Presentations should last for between 5 and 6 minutes. If two people are presenting the time limit is 10 minutes. It is acceptable to be slightly less than that, but the presentation must not exceed the time limit.

Guidance for your Report:

  • The report contains fuller information on your topic and is for the other students to use when they want to find out more about that subject. They will be put onto Online for all students to use. The best of them may be chosen for topics in the final exam.
  • Each report should begin with a statement of the topic to be discussed followed by an outline structure of the presentation by way of headings and sub-headings with basic explanations, where relevant.
  • The major findings of the analysis should be presented in the bodyof the report handout, appropriately referenced for ideas and information of a significant nature borrowed and used in the presentation.
  • A good conclusion should draw the report together.
  • The final section of the report should detail include all references (including page numbers) and other sources used in the report (eg. Financial press and internet sources.) Such referencing must bein accordance with the correct procedure. Please see:

http://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/business/study-and-assessment-resources/uts-harvard-referencing

  • A section containing appendices may be included for additional material. This is sometimes useful in providing numerical examples and statistical data in support of the topic.
  • The length of the report should be around 1000 words and done in A4 size, using a 12 point font. This word total does not include references and appendices, they are in addition to the 1000 words.
  • Any appendix inclusions should be linked to material in the body of the report and not added as extra unrelated material.
  • Ensure that you run a spell check on your report and fix errors before it is handed in.
  • A well-prepared report should enable each student to develop a more comprehensive set of notes for each topic being covered. These notes are very important for all students.

Guidance for Power Point slides

  • Each slide should be able to be clearly read at the back of the room being used. This requires careful selection of font size and colour combinations used.
  • Do not put too much information on an individual slide.
  • The slides should be a summary of the main points of your report, not all of it reproduced.
  • If you wish to show tables of data on slides make sure they are readable.
  • Do include short video clips in the presentation if you find something very relevant.
  • Leave each slide in view for long enough that all of your audience can fully comprehend the content.
  • A poorly produced and presented topic will be marked accordingly.
