Developing rapport with a child with Oppositional Defiant Disorder

After reading this case study, please explain how your personal values and attitudes may influence your development of rapport with Jane

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) refers to a psychological disorder that affects kids and creates a variety of problems. ODD remains a behavioral condition that affects children and is characterized by persistent disobedience as well as aggression. ODD is expected to affect one out of every ten kids under the age of 12, with boys outnumbering girls by two to one. A kid with Oppositional Defiant Disorder does not listen to his or her elders and does not obey their instructions. Furthermore, such a kid believes that what his or her elders are asking him or her to accomplish is absurd. Other symptoms of ODD include getting upset and being violent. According to many researchers, a person with ODD may: Easily upset, annoyed, or furious, throw temper outbursts on a regular basis, argue with people regularly, especially the most familiar persons in their lives, such as parents, refuse to follow rules and appear to be trying to offend or irritate people Have low self-esteem, have a low threshold for frustration and attempt to place blame on others for any mishaps or bad behavior.

To deal with Jane who is the Patient in this case, I need to be confident that my tactics shall make her change her behaviors. To form a bond with Jane, I must first comprehend her aggressive conduct and recognize its impact on others. Another key component of creating a deep bond with Jane to understand what has caused her to express the anger. Because Jane has previously displayed highly aggressive behavior and she has also failed to listen to the teacher at times, I shall use a tactic in which I shall let Jane determine the plan. In addition, I shall offer her responsibility for her actions. Overreacting to Jane's hostile actions shall only complicate things. Staying calm shall help the child relax and give him time to reflect on his behavior.

From the case study, list the areas of main concern that you can identify in Jane’s life

Jane has behavioral challenges, despite the fact that she is full of life and enjoys being around others. People who meet Jane Would not detect that she is actually suffering from Oppositional Defiant Disorder. She is a physically active person who enjoys interacting with others. She has no uneasiness that is visible to others, yet she has trouble managing her wrath when she is upset or frustrated. She can't handle negative feedback or even constructive criticism. She was caught physically hitting others during an outburst of anger, which is one of the most serious problems in children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Being suspended from school for the fifth time is a significant number. She has to learn how to manage her anger in order to succeed in school. When she is in her own age group, she finds it hard to fit in, as seen by her persistently failing behaviors in the classroom.

Reducing the risks for critical incidents

List three strategies you would utilize to assist Jane to start thinking of goals she may want to achieve this year

She intends to relocate to Samoa this year because her grandfather remained born there. She hopes that the Samoan people would accept her. Nevertheless, the problem will remain the same, if she switches to Samoan and she will continue to struggle with anger management problems. She might also consider going to school in that place. In this regard, the following strategies can be considered:

Cognitive problem-solving method: The mental process that humans go through to uncover, evaluate, and solve problems is referred to as problem-solving in cognitive psychology. Cognitive problem-solving method is commonly adopted in children with ODD. This includes working with the kid and the trainer to establish solutions that are acceptable to both of them. I'll also try to help Jane acquire social skills by allowing her to socialize with people of her own age and constantly monitoring her. This allows her to be more flexible in her actions. I shall, however, occasionally give her very specific directions and wait for her to reply. If she doesn't, she'll have to deal with the repercussions, such as no Television time and so on. I shall reward her with presents or accolades whenever she exhibits good conduct. My behaviors shall encourage her to maintain a positive attitude. Kids with ODD want unconditional love as well as recognition from their trainer, which I shall deliver on a regular basis.

Considering risk, what possible potential critical incidents could occur when working with Jane (list three)? They must be three separate risks/potential critical incidents

Potential risk factors in this case are: Lack of parental discipline and supervision, Neglect and abuse, and Bad family environment.

How will reduce each of these risks?

I will reduce the risk by: understanding the behavior of Jane

  • Identify ODD’s symptoms
  • Check for a tendency toward victimhood
  • Discuss the reaction of jane
  • Talk about constructive methods to handle a hard situation

Considering Jane’s past, explain what you believe Jane will be feeling and what concerns she may have regarding her immediate future?

Because she has experienced physical abuse a result of her biological father's, he has left huge negative impact on the kid. She doesn't want to live with her mother's boyfriends since she has trust difficulties with father figures. Her mother was also a drug user, which caused her to be estranged from her mother. She prefers to live in assisted accommodation or in Samoa instead of living with her mother, who gave birth to her.

Develop an action plan for Jane listing three services that you feel may be suitable to refer Jane. Explain why you have chosen these services

Main areas of concern

Given Jane's history of ODD, I'll do my best to cope with her and manage her with care. However, I would still recommend the following 3 services to her.

  • Consultation with a doctor or therapist: ODD is frequently accompanied by other mental problems that remain not obvious in the early stages. Early diagnosis, on the other hand, is critical, and Jane could seek future assistance from a counselor or GP.
  • Emotional Regulation Program (ERP): During this program, a counselor talks with the children about how to deal with strong emotions like anger or impatience.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: CBT is a type of psychological treatment that has been shown to be useful for a variety of issues, including anxiety disorders, depression, alcohol as well as drug abuse issues, marital issues, serious mental disease and eating disorders. CBT, according to numerous research studies, improves functioning as well as quality of life significantly. CBT has been shown to be as successful as, if not more effective than, numerous forms of psychological therapy and psychiatric drugs in numerous trials. It’s true that CBT has progressed as a result of both research as well as therapeutic experience. Indeed, CBT is a technique for which there remains a great deal of scientific proof that the procedures created genuinely work. CBT varies from numerous other types of psychological treatment in this way. Children are frequently referred to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in order to improve their social skills. Jane may need to participate in CBT if she does not demonstrate flexibility in school and gets suspended again.

After reading this case study, please explain how your personal values and attitudes may influence your development of rapport with Maddison.

Maddison is suffering from a problem of not being proud of her and enjoy doing things which the parents think are for boys. From, my perspective I think she should be help at early stage.

From the case study, list the areas of main concern that you can identify in Maddison’s life.

The area of main concerns include: The kid is not proud of her gender ii) Forced career choices, and Peer influence.

Using your own word detail how you would respond to Maddison? Explain why you have responded to Maddison, this way?

First of all, I will talk to Madison about diversity. It is true that when you talk about differences with the kid, it will make her be proud of her gender. In this, I will tell her that being differences are good, and she is good just for being alive. I will communicate to her that being different remains a good thing

I would proudly talk about what makes her unique.  In this, I will advise her to avoid making comparisons based on gender and physical appearance.

My approach to navigating differences will be worth sharing the parents of the child. There are not wrong or right ways to do this, therefore, letting the parents know things dealing with the career choices of their kids, might be helpful.

Considering the information that Maddison has shared with you what do you see being the most important issues that  Maddison would identify from her perspective?

To me, the most important issue here is career choices: Parents should allow their kids to follow and do things that they enjoy most. Forcing a kid to undertake a career meant for girls is not the best thing in this generation

Describe the strategies you would take:

a. To ensure you provide a person centred service to Maddison

i. I will create a framework

ii. I’ll define roles and duties (especially in terms of leading the person-centered planning process at both a group and individual level), as well as any training and assistance that will be needed.

2) Selecting plan facilitators and ensuring that they are well-trained, experienced, and supported.

Strategies to set goals for the child

3) Create systems for continuing communication, plan administration, and monitoring, assessment, review, and improvement of the person-centered planning process.

b. To ensure you meet the requirements of the services

I will follow the required processes necessary to attained the set goals

c. Responding to Maddison’s needs now and whilst you are working with her on the program.

First of all, I will try to discover what is important to Madison. And use the available resources flexibly, created around what remains important to Madison from her own perspective

How will refer to Maddison from now on?

I will refer to Madison as a respectable person, proud of her gender after undergoing the required treatment.

Your regular supervisor for the program is not in and the relieving supervisor calls you over to inform you that a complaint has been made by Maddison’s mother because you have supported Maddison to participate in activities that she feels are not appropriate for her daughter and you are treating her like a boy when it is clear she is a girl. How will you respond to the relieving supervisor and explain how you are working with this young person?

I will inform the supervisor to explain to the parent on the important of allowing the kids to follow their own dream. I will also inform him to inform the parents that those are the requirement needed for the treatment and they will make the child change her behaviors.

The young person makes it possible for other supervisee to attain emotional release more so in relation to a problem as well as to think more deeply and more clearly about the situation. He facilitates the supervisee to release his/her own problem-solving forces.

Explain the steps/strategies you would take to find out what is happening for Lucy because you have become concern for her wellbeing? (for each step provide a rationale from a best practice why you have taken these steps).

I will try to be proactive by approaching her and initiating conversations. I will not rush the procedure. I will think of it as performing the same thing but with a lower level of intensity. I will try not to impress myself through braggadocio. This is because it has the exact opposite result. Instead than attempting to portray my entire personality on the first day, I will allow some days to pass. I will not force conversation; instead, I will start it when it seems natural.

Why do you think that Lucy was trying to avoid you? Explain your answer from her perspective.

Hold open talk: A successful team is built on open and honest communication. This is true whether we're meeting in person or online, because it helps us develop the interpersonal skills needed for efficient teamwork. Everyone is kept informed as well as in the loop through sharing ideas, points of view, information, and expertise.

Check-in regularly: I will ensure that she has access to regular as well as scheduled support if necessary. This will allow me to know what is happening to her

How do you respond to this disclosure? Ensure you answer from a client response, worker responsibilities and organizational perspective. Please explain why responded the way you did (include knowledge and skills used).

Jane may be think that I may miss judge her situation. To Lucy, she thinks that I may laugh and announce to the entire friends after finding out what happened to her.

I will inform her to report the issue to the management of Concern. First, I will let her know that having pregnancy is not a sign because there is a department in the organization that deals with such situations. I will tell her to accept her situation and report the issue to the management for necessary guidance. I responded that way because it is the requirement stated in the firm’s policies

Identify the ethical dilemmas you might be faced with in this case study and what might be creating the dilemmas for you.

I may be face with ethical dilemma of convincing Lucy not to undertake abortion. I will also find it difficult to convince to interact freely with other students.
