Write a formal report to observe and analyse whether characters in a video scenario (from the choices given below) are showing effective cultural capabilities and maintaining a culturally safe space. Also, recommend how effective cultural capabilities of the characters in the video could be improved.

Summary and Observations

The cultural self-awareness, cultural capability, as well as cultural intelligence are important necessities when fashioning safe spaces in a given cultural setting, for example, educational or workplace setting. Consequently, safe places are fashioned when everyone within the cultural environment takes part and engages in a positive way (Ang & Van Dyne, 2015). In line with a business environment, safe places will motivate the people of goodwill to promote ethics towards promoting life of those who could have been affected negatively. These safe situations as seen in business ethics is clearly meant to promote the goodwill without judgments of social problems, like cultural competence, diversity, as well as injustice (Bruhn, 2005).

Scope

This report would emphasize on safe spaces in a business setting. The 2008 film “Seven Pounds: Styles of Expressing Conflict” has been cautiously chosen to discuss the concept of safe spaces. Specific scenes in the film have been shown as safe spaces and will the principal focus of the report.

Aim

The report will offer an all-inclusive summary, account and analysis of the film “Seven Pounds: Styles of Expressing Conflict” and how it illustrates the concept of safe spaces. The report will too recommend on ways of enhancing the safety of business environments.

Summary and Observations

Summary

The 2008 film “Seven Pounds: Styles of Expressing Conflict” staring Will Smith was directed by Muccino, G delivery a powerful message on the mission of life. The movie leaves the audience contemplate what their mission in life is and the way it could change if their life unexpectedly altered in a second (Compton & Blumer, 2009). The movie is written in a manner that each viewer may consume his or her individual message. Thus, the primary message of the movie is centred on what each person’s mission in life-what is the personal purpose in this world.

All through the film, it becomes apparent that Ben Thomas, Will Smith, as the main character, was in a terrible car accident, which claimed seven lives, comprising his wife. Therefore, Ben’s attitude of life instantly changed with the car accident. Following the accident, Ben makes the decision to radically change the life situations of seven strangers, the last of which needs his own life.

The big question in the movie is why it takes something so severe along with devastating to change Ben’s view of life. The film ends in a sad ending because eventually Ben dies after donating his organ. The movie is geared toward the domain of individual ethics, as well as individuals’ choices; nonetheless, the message of the movie carries into the domain of business ethics (Hadley, 2018).

Analysis

Observations

There are several key events in the movie that demonstrate safe situations when it comes to business environment as far as business ethics is concerned. The primary goodwill present in the movie when it comes to business ethics is when Ben Thomas factually donates each main body organ to recipients in an endeavour to transform many lives. In addition, the business ethic of goodwill is demonstrated when Ben donates his liver to a social employee. Another business ethic that is seen in the movie is fairness and justice.

It is clear in the movie that individuals that are not given a reasonable chance are afforded a second chance by Ben Thomas. This is evident further when he dies to bring about the self-induced justice. Compassion is another business ethic that is evident in the relationship between Ben and Emily Posas who he falls in love with him prior to giving up his life for Posas. All these acts of business ethics were meant for safe situations (LaSalle, 2008).

Analysis

The movie “Seven Pounds: Styles of Expressing Conflict” depicts of concept of “safe spaces” by promoting risk-taking, new ideas, creative thinking and compassion. Self spaces are essential in not only in business setting, but also in the community and place of work. Nonetheless, in order to comprehend what safe places are, and how to fashion these safe environments, we need to examine the cultural self-awareness, cultural capabilities, as well as cultural intelligence that are important in comprehending this idea further (Hunter, 2012). This analysis will examine the three elements of safe places: cultural self-awareness, cultural intelligence and cultural capabilities by examining the different events in the movie.

Intercultural Communication

In the movie, the element of cultural self-awareness is evident when Ben donates his blood to Emily is an act where there is proper communication between the two regarding the need to help others. The communication plays a leading role that allows Ben to communicate effective with others in the society (Flanja, 2009). The communication between the different cultures is designed to promote a safe environment where others can thrive well.  Thus, understanding the nature of the concept “culture” is the primary step in acknowledging and recognizing safe places towards safe environments.

Therefore, comprehending culture is vital in all elements of society-from communication barriers to the perception of the social realm. The three primary aspects that exist in the culture comprise the experience, knowhow and behaviour. These three elements create the basis of what is understood as cultural self-awareness (Mirsky, 2013).

Intercultural Communication

In addition, the cultural self-awareness may be described as the basis of communication, as well as entails the capability of standing back from ourselves besides becoming attentive of the cultural beliefs, values, as well as attitudes. Therefore, the responsiveness concerning culture becomes an issue of discussion when interactions are undertaken with individuals originating from different cultures. A consideration of behaviour to be suitable in one culture may be inappropriate in a different culture (Crowne, 2013).

Compassion

Compassion is evident between the relationship between Ben Thomas and Emily where they settle in love because of the cultural intelligence between them. Cultural intelligence has the understanding as the ability for relating, as well as effective working amongst diverse cultures. Cultural intelligence is the ability of the individual concerning adaptation to the cultural variations as the individual makes interaction with individuals of other parts have different culture. This is the natural capacity of an external person for interpreting ambiguous and unfamiliar gestures of others (Brislin, Worthley & MacNab, 2006).

This means it is the capacity for crossing the boundaries and are thriving them in the cultures that are many in numbers. In addition, the surgeon takes the compassion and helps many people to undergo transplants that were meant to show the element of compassion. The element of compassion was possible through cultural intelligence because of the good relation with others like Ben Thomas and Emily. Thus, Ben’s deepest compassion was not for Emily Posas, but also for the other six people who they related together in different instances. This compassion was also evident when Dan assisted Ben commit suicide because it was his wish to help Emily live a better life (Compton & Blumer, 2009).

Respect for Cultures

The movie demonstrated the significance of cultural abilities through delivering services that are consistent with other cultures that promotes safe space. This was evident when the surgeon undertook different transplants to different people from different cultures successfully. Cultural capabilities actually make a referring to knowhow, skills, the systems, and behaviours that is required for planning, reinforcing, enhancing, as well as delivering the services in a way that is proper and respected by the culture (Maister & Tsakiris, 2014).

This was evident in the movie through the acts of Dan, who was Ben’s life span ally and a heart surgeon, consents to total the heart transfer, which saved Emily’s life (Quappe & Cantatore, 2005). Dan understood the different cultural systems, behaviours and knowledge that allowed him to deliver services adequately. Whilst Dan does not help Ben’s suicide, he agrees to proceed with it, as well as prepares everything that allowed transplant to proceed smoothly. This matter is shown as one in which Dan has to break his Hippocratic .

Compassion

Oath for the greatest good, to assist his ally attain salvation along with save Emily’s life. This matter is solved BY Dan violating nearly all the laws plus oaths he has taken as a surgeon to deliver his help to people that needed his services. This was possible through the cultural capabilities because he believed that he did the right to offer services to others without violating their cultural beliefs. This implies that Dan had the knowledge of other cultures that allowed him to offer his services sufficiently. Therefore, Dan understood that he had responsibilities and obligations to his profession and to the greater society and entailed respecting the different cultures that he served (Wright, 2009).

Recommendations

All through the analysis, it is discussed that the movie is shown as a culturally “safe space” since the movie encourages new, compassion, risk-taking and open discussions. All these “safe” aspects are important in promoting the environment of better business environment and quality of life for other people from other cultures.

Nonetheless, the “safe space” situation shown in the analysis could be better modified to promote an even safer space. In the movie, Ben should have not commit suicide to help others like Emily, but should have looked for other options that are available and good have been provided by the surgeon. There are transplant organs available in the healthcare centres. Ben could have explored other transplant sources rather than sacrificing his own organs to donate the organs to others (Aschieri, 2016). Therefore, Ben should have embraced better communication with other individuals form other cultures to seek transplant organs and stop his suicide option that ended up dying at the end of the movie.

Conclusions

The 2008 “Seven Pounds: Styles of Expressing Conflict” provides an effective model of safe space through business ethics that were evident in the film. There was important cultural self-awareness in the movie that allowed for better intercultural communication among the characters in the movie that promoted better relationship. Cultural intelligence and cultural capabilities were also evident in the through compassion and respect to other cultures. It is important that there is the need for people from different cultures to eliminate and forget the cultural barriers and they must respect to each other’s culture with compassion and promote intercultural communication. Finally, this report adequately reinforced the movie as a culturally “safe space”.
