Causes Of Secession And Civil War In US History

The main cause of secession was state’s right and slavery. The four states which were Georgia, Mississippi, Texas and South Carolina had strongly defended slavery while fighting for the state’s rights. When Abraham Lincoln was elected in the presidential election, then the first secession was caused in 1861 (Blum, et.al).

The Southern secession which happened between 1830s and 1860s over the issue of slavery. After the failure of first secession, second secession took place when the presidency was won by Abraham Lincoln and then it led to civil war. The various stages of secession took place only because of the failure of the first secession which was on the issue of slavery.

The North was fighting for the reunification and also tried to compromise in the southern succession war.

After the failure of the first succession as neither of the side was ready to compromise  and there was a period in which everyone was waiting for either of the states to compromise but no one did and then the uncompromising scenario had led to the beginning of the civil war.

Southern states seceded from the union so that they can protect their state’s rights, disagreements over tariffs and the institution of slavery. Southern states believed that a republican government will dissolve the institution of slavery and hence would not honour the states rights and will further promote the tariff laws. Southern also justified the secession by bringing states rights granted by the federal government and the relevant differences on the issue of slavery (Berg, et.al, 1760-1860).
