Contemporary designers can learn from history. Studying design history is useful because. Select three different reasons to support and complete this statement. Prepare a scholarly essay that uses academic sources to provide evidence in your discussions supporting these reasons.
Passion to communicate:
Designing is an art of creating an object with imagination and creativity of the mind. Designing history is considered as a study of objects related to design that represents the historical as well as the stylistic context. According to Fineder & Geisler (2010), design history includes objects related to architecture, fashion, crafts and graphic design. The essay focuses on visual design or graphic design and the reasons behind the choice of such a topic. Visual design is considered as a process of making visual communication with an individual. Visual designers combine certain symbols and pictures along with written texts in order to create a meaningful statement. As such, the reasons for choosing visual design can be analysed based on the advantages it provides. According to Heskett (2005), the three reasons for choosing visual design include the passion to communicate with others in a creative manner, to enhance career growth prospects and to learn new things. The reasons can be explored in a broader manner.
After having established the reasons behind choosing visual designing as a topic of interest, it is important to analyse the reasons deeply in order to develop a more comprehensive idea about the benefits of visual designing.
Passion to communicate: One of the main reasons behind choosing visual designing is the passion to communicate with other people. It has been stated by Curl (2006) that most people prefer to make communication by the use of visual images. This helps them to portray their feelings and ensure that the message reaches the intended person. It has been seen that despite learning the art of painting many people cannot connect with others. This requires special talents and a proper visual design may help it to communicate with the people. In this regard, the role of the visual designer comes into the analysis. According to Meggs, Purvis and Meggs (2012), the role of a visual designer is to create designs that convey a message to the people. Such designing develops a passion for communicating with the people and ensuring that the people understand the message. As such, the message that is intended for the people can be related to any topic. For example, often it is seen that posters are made to make people try to quit smoking. These posters are the creative works of a visual designer in order to send a message to the society regarding the harmful effects of smoking (Hennessy, 2012). An example can be provided that highlights the manner in which communication is made via visual designing (Refer to Appendix 1 for the poster).
Enhance career growth:
The poster provides a message to quit smoking in a unique manner. From the poster, it can be seen that the designer used a creative text as well as images that display the harmful effects of smoking. The fact that the purchase of cigarettes can be costly is displayed in the poster. The poster tries to send a message that says that it is not a good way to spend money as smoking can only result in life loss. Hence, people can spend cash on purchasing products or consuming edibles that can have a provide safety of life. Thus, the innovative manner in which visual designers communicate with the public is important to choose visual design as a topic for analysis. However, Ching, Jarzombek and Prakash (2011) stated that the message sent by the visual designers need to be clear and convenient for people to understand. Broad sentences are not required instead relevant statement can be used in order to convey the message to the people. In the case of the poster described, the message is appropriate in communicating about the effectiveness of smoking.
Enhance career growth: Ingersoll and Kostof (2013) stated that visual designing could help in setting up a career of a person. This is because the designing creative posters, logos and leaflets can attract the attention of reputed organisations. Organisations look to employ graphic designers in order to promote their products and perform corporate social responsibility that helps in increasing its profitability. In order to do so in an effective manner, organisations tend to recruit people that are potent in visual designing. Designing of company logo can also be done with the help of the visual designers. The logo of a company is considered as an important factor that develops a brand image. Hence, the career of an individual can grow if visual designing is adopted as a full-time career. It can also be considered for part-time jobs for people that enjoy creativity. It has been stated by Goldhagen (2005) that visual designing as a career helps in the satisfaction of a person intended for creative learning. Such careers are usually fun as people get to display their ideas in public and get a huge payroll for doing so. A visual designer earns about $21.22 per hour of work that is done by them. An example can be provided in order to enhance the role of visual designing in helping career progress.
Learn new things:
From the image, it is seen that Google creates various designs during events that hold national significance. These designs are to pay tribute to the national and international events based on the country in which the events take place. Professional visual designers that make a proper research about the ways to incorporate these ideas perform these works (Hunt, 2014). These provide people with the knowledge that national events are also of importance. Some of the designs are developed only for a specific place such as the Mid-Autumn festival in China, Japan and Taiwan. Thus, the people creating these designs enjoy a high pay grade along with their work as the creativity remains unique and is appreciated by other people. However, Gorman (2003) stated that creating these designs require lots of stress and focus. It is advisable to take up a career in this field only if the person is willing to work hard and dedicate focus to the designs. Apart from this, creative ideas need to be encouraged in order to be successful in the business. The designs made by a visual designer cannot be the same as the designs made by another visual designer. Hence, the creative talent is required in order to be a proper visual designer.
Learn new things: In order to become a successful visual designer, the mere knowledge of art cannot help an individual. In the era of technology, it is necessary that individuals with a passion for creativity and painting remain well aware of the use of technical software and tools to for creating designs (Raizman, 2010). Thus, the urge for learning new things is important in order to develop a career in visual designing. It has been seen that many paintings are created with the use of technological tools such as Illustrator or CorelDraw. This can help in making the picture more clear and aim to provide a proper message to the people. However, one needs the training to implement such talent. Hence, people with an urge to learn further can be interested in the topic as it provides opportunities to develop a creative side of the individuals. Staying updated is also required in order to remain successful in the business (Sparke, 2013). In this regard, it can be said that an individual follows a certain hierarchical process that highlights the need for visual designing in a systematic manner.
From the image, it can be seen that the process of learning visual designing is a systematic one that follows every step in a precise manner. It identifies the elements involved in the topic along with its pattern and arrangement. As stated by Rifkind (2006) one of the most important elements of being a visual designer is to be realistic. The realistic manner in which the messages are presented is considered as important as people need to believe that the messages and the creation can help in imparting knowledge. Often it is seen that irrelevant information is provided in posters that do not fit with the image. Such posters cause people to take the message in a light manner. Hence, people wanting to learn about making an improvement to the skills need to take up visual designing. Harris (1997) stated that the systematic approach to the process of graphic designing is important in order to ensure that people wanting to learn the concept receive proper training.
Thus, it can be concluded that visual designing is one of the most innovative and creative forms of learning that individuals take up in the modern day. The reasons behind choosing visual designing suggest the validity of the topic and the impact it has on a modern day. The use of visual designing is required in every field in the world. Organisations, entertainment units and much more adopt this practice in order to enhance the chances of being recognised in the market. Learning the art of visual designing provides a great career prospect for people.
