The purpose of this assignment is to investigate a dataset utilising the knowledge learned in Modules One and Two. This will enable conclusions to be drawn that ultimately assist in decision making. The assignment requires you to analyse a given dataset, interpret the results, and then draw conclusions such that you are able to reply to specific questions being asked of you in the form of a report. (These questions are asked in the following memorandum).

Working Hours of Techmart Company Employees

Question 1

  1. Work hours and employees

From the analysis, employees have been seen to work different hours yet they are supposed to work for 40 hours a week.  Some have been seen to work for less than 40 hours, 40 hours, between 41 and 60 hours and 60 hours and above. In less than 40 hours category, there were 44 employees. On 40 hours, there are 178 employees. Between 41 – 60 hours, there were 152 employees. Lastly, there were 26 employees who work for over 60 hours.

Proportion = 178/400 = 0.445

The total employee population = 9800.

So, the number of workers estimated to be working 41 hours and above is calculated as follows;

Unionized and non-union employees

  1. Hours worked by each group in a week

The management of Techmart Company also wanted to establish whether there was a difference in working hours of union and non- union employees. A cross tabulation was therefore done and the results were as in the table above.  On 40 hours, there were 144 non-union members and 34 union workers. In total they were 178 under this category. On between 41 to 60 hours, there were 132 non-union members and 20 union members. In total they were 152 under this category. On 61 hours and above, there were 20 non-union members and 9 union members. In total they were 29 employees under this category. On less than 40 hours, there were 35 non-union members and 9 union members. In total they were 44 employees under this category

  1. Workers categorized by occupation

The management of Techmart Company also wanted to establish whether there was a difference in union membership by occupation. A cross tabulation was therefore done and the results were as in the table above.  Under administration, there were 56 non-union members and 9 union workers. In total they were 65 under this category. Under laborers, there were 44 non-union members and 20 union members. In total they were 64 under this category. Under managers, there were 61 non-union members and 4 union members. In total they were 65 under this category. Under producers, there were 41 non-union members and 13 union members. In total they were 54 under this category. Under professionals, there were 54 non-union members and 12 union members. In total they were 66 under this category. Under service persons, there were 25 non-union members and 4 union members. In total they were 29 under this category. Under tech/sales persons, there were 50 non-union members and 7 union members. In total they were 57 under this category.

  1. Workers categorized by job satisfaction

Union Membership of Techmart Company Employees

The management of Techmart Company also wanted to establish whether there was a difference in union membership by job satisfaction. A cross tabulation was therefore done and the results were as in the table above. Under little dissatisfied, there were 19 non-union members and 8 union workers. In total they were 27 employees under this category. Under moderate satisfaction, there were 143 non-union members and 28 union workers. In total they were 171 employees under this category. Under very dissatisfied, there were 12 non-union members and 5 union workers. In total they were 17 employees under this category. Under very satisfied, there were 157 non-union members and 28 union workers. In total they were 185 employees under this category.

Question 3

Predicting pre-tax income

The interest of any business organization is to know how much profit it makes within a given period of time. Also of interest is the drivers of this interest or factors that influences the level of this profit. It is for this reason that Techmart also wanted to establish the significant determinants of its pre-tax income. A correlation analysis was conducted and the correlation coefficients found as shown in the table above. The significant determinants of pre-tax profit can be seen to be pre-tax family income which has a correlation coefficient of 0.66. The other strong determinant is work years of the employee. This variable has a correlation coefficient of 0.3. The last one is education years of the employee. This variable posed a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.22.

  1. Age summary statistics for employees

In order to know the number of workers who were nearing the retirement age, the company administration wanted to know the mean age so as to know how far the population is far from retirement generally. The mean, median and the modal age was calculated to be 39.41 years, 38 years and 33 years respectively. The youngest and the oldest employees were found to be 18 years and 69 years respectively. The deviation from the mean was found to be 10.6 years.

  1. Average time employees have worked at technomart

In order to know the number of years or length that employees had worked in the company, the company administration wanted to know the mean number of years and the deviation so as to know how loyal are the employees to the company basing on the length of time they worked for the company. The mean, median and the modal length was calculated to be 8.67 years, 5.25 years and 1 year respectively. The least serving employee and the longest working employee were found to have worked for the company for 0.08 years and 52.25 years respectively. The deviation from the mean was found to be 8.37 years.

The 95% confidence interval for the mean difference is (0.34, 1.99). To add on, the p-value is 0.01 < 0.05 thus the null hypothesis is not accepted. The research report is therefore made to conclude that the mean length of employment in general at Techmart is not more than 7.5.

  • T-test for mean value for male employment years

Hypothesis

H0: Mean duration of male employment is more than 7.5 years

Versus

H1: Mean duration of male employment is not more than 7.5 years

The observed mean can be seen to be 2.86 t-standard errors above 7.5. It can also be observed that the mean difference is 1.7 between the true and the hypothesized mean. The 95% confidence interval for the mean difference is (0.52, 2.87). To add on, the p-value is 0.01 < 0.05 thus the null hypothesis is not accepted. The research report is therefore made to conclude that the mean length of employment of males in general at Techmart is not more than 7.5.

  1. In determining the sample size, it can be said that sometimes there is no ideal number. The sample size to be used in research will depend on how varied the population is. The less varied the population is, the less the sample size while the more varied the sample size is the larger the sample needed. However, the formula for determining the sample size is as below;

  1. Sample size for those who work for more than 60 hours a week

This number shows that to be able to get a sufficient number of employees who work for more than 60 hours, then a larger sample should be used. The sample used was small that is why only 26 employees were found to be working above 60 hours per week in that sample. The number should be 94 as calculated above. For us to have 94, the sample should be 1446 as calculated below.

Conclusion

From the analysis of the research data and findings, several conclusions were made. To start with, it was observed that the mean difference is 0.43 between the true and the hypothesized mean.
